The sophomore single from the Levee Bandits, "Granny Mae" is a remix of Lost Bayou Ramblers' track "Granny Smith" from their Grammy Award winning albumKalenda being released by Nouveau Electric Records on Mardi Gras day, 2019. Produced by Louisiana vaporwave artist/remixer IMAGINE I AM; the track was mixed by Korey Richey (Lost Bayou Ramblers, LCD Sound System), mastered by Bob Weston, and features spoken word samples by Louis Michot's late mentor Ethel Mae Bourque. It stems from a vast trove of LBR remixes undertaken by IMAGINE I AM.
Nouveau Electric Records is an independent record label based in Arnaudville, Louisiana with the mission of promoting experimental and traditional music inspired by the language, people, and culture of Southern Louisiana. The label will prioritize work sung or spoken in Louisiana French but won't be exclusively Francophone. It seeks to bridge the gap between tradition and evolution by introducing new creative visions to the centuries-old instrumentation and expressive vocabularies of the region.
The second full length release from the Nouveau Electric will be Victim & Villain, the third long player from Lafayette, Louisiana Outlaw Country outfit The Rayo Brothers, which comes out March 29. The new album was recorded at Maurice, Louisiana's renowned Dockside Studio by Grammy-winning engineer Tony Daigle who also mixed the set. Michot of Grammy-winners Lost Bayou Ramblers co-produced Victim & Villain with the Brothers' Jesse Reaux.
The first release from Nouveau Electric was issued last Summer, the debut single from the Levee Bandits, "Bé," also a collaboration between Lost Bayou Ramblers and IMAGINE I AM. The label's first full length release was L.E.S. DOUZE Volume 1 by THE STONED, the initial installment of "L.E.S. DOUZE: 12 Live Recordings from Louis Michot's residency at The Stone in NYC's Lower East Side" ("L.E.S." = Lower East Side' "Douze" = dozen en Francais). This is a series of recordings by Michot and various collaborators performing live at John Zorn's renowned NYC club The Stone during the Spring of 2016.
NER was created in 2018 by Michot (fiddler and vocalist with Grammy winners Lost Bayou Ramblers), who serves as its artistic director. His roles include seeking out music and artists to work with, scheduling and promoting releases, and managing the overall operation of the label.
The rest of the NER team consists of a graphic designer, audio engineer, and a distribution manager. Michot plans on monthly releases, with the artists and NER team sharing the gross profits.
NER will release music digitally (downloads and streaming), with download cards adorning tangible merchandise such as bandanas and hats. Vinyl and CDs will also be available for most full length LPs. The label will increase its working capital from the label share of the gross profits. As its financial resources grow, NER will issue Louisiana out-of-print re-releases and fund other products.
