Laura Cantrell is back on tour with a residency at Atwood's in Boston every Tuesday through November 17th. In addition, she will play a in Philadelphia on 11/9 and in New York on 11/12.
Nashville-born, New York City-based singer-songwriter Laura Cantrell will begin a residency at Atwood's in Boston, MA on November 3 with shows every Tuesday through November 17. Special guests include Amy Pickard of She-Haw. Cantrell will be performing songs from her critically acclaimed album, No Way There From Here, which is out now on Thrift Shop Recordings. Recently, Laura sat down with Mac McCaughan (Superchunk, Merge Records) for a conversation at the Talkhouse Music Podcast in which Mac says of her new album is "my favorite record of yours," listen to the conversation here: http://bit.ly/1ReCd8F. See below for more tour dates.
For the U.K.'s Record Store Day 2015, Cantrell recorded an answer song to The Charlatans' new single "Emilie." Using string arrangements from the original, but with new lyrics and featuring pedal steel guitar by Son Volt's Mark Spencer, the song is called "Emanuel." The music video can be viewed here: http://bit.ly/1Inc2b3. In celebration of No Way There From Here, Cantrell performed the tracks "Starry Skies" and "Can't Wait" on "CBS This Morning." Additionally, Vanity Fair describes the album as, "...lush and pretty in all the right ways and never cloying, thanks to intelligent production and the cool mountain air of Cantrell's voice" while NPR Music critic Ann Powers calls Cantrell, "...one of the stylists who defined Americana music as we now know it..." and Rolling Stone asserts, "Cantrell brings bell-like vocal clarity to her stories, which illuminate more than explain-just enough to make you want to hear'em again."
Moreover, The New Yorker states, "Her songs are admirably direct and clear, like a good friend looking you in the eye and telling the truth about both you and her." No Way There From Here was produced by Cantrell and Mark Nevers at Nashville's acclaimed Beech House studios and features writing collaborations with Tracyanne Campbell (Camera Obscura), Amy Allison and Franklin Bruno, as well as guest musicians Mark Spencer (Son Volt), Jim Lauderdale, Kenny Vaughan, Michael Cerveris, Caitlin Rose, William Tyler (Lambchop), Paul Niehaus (Lambchop, Calexico) and Paul Burch.
Of making the new album, Cantrell says, "Each recording project presents a fresh question to answer about what you're doing and why. For this record, where I've worked for the first time with mostly my own songs and point of view, the pressure I've felt is to find what suits each song and do it justice. It was challenging and exciting because I have had to really define the sound." In addition to her 2000 debut Not The Tremblin' Kind, which pioneering British disc Jockey John Peel described as "...my favorite record of the last ten years, possibly my life," Cantrell has released When The Roses Bloom Again (2002), Humming By The Flowered Vine (2005), and Kitty Wells Dresses: Songs of the Queen of Country Music (2011).
