After a low-quality version of 'Applause' leaked online last week, Gaga was forced to unleash the single the ahead of its official August 19 release.
Over the weekend, 'Applause' dropped to #4 on iTunes, and #8 on Amazon, with only 225,000 downloads for the first week on iTunes. Katy Perry's 'Roar' is expected to have sold somewhere between 525,000-550,000 digital downloads once the official numbers are in.
Gaga has been promoting the track heavily to her 40 million twitter followers, including asking fans to buy multiple copies to help with sales, noting "Screenshot your 'Applause' purchase @ladygaga request to radio, & hashtag #Applause well choose 2 devoted fans to go WITH me to ITunes fest!" and "The 2 fans w the most purchase/gift screenshots, radio requests, 'Applause' selfies/video, will fly international to meet me+watch the show!"
