Legendary recording artist Tony Bennett pairs with chart-topping pop superstar Lady Gaga for a new duets album containing multiple Great American Songbook standards and the performers discuss the new project in a new interview.
Earlier this week, Gaga released a short clip of herself onstage singing the incomparable Richard Rodgers/Lorenz Hart staple "Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered" from PAL JOEY, and today a video of the two performing the Cole Porter staple "Anything Goes" was released, as well.
Sharing the story of the impetus for the project, Gaga remembers, "He heard me sing that song ["Orange Colored Sky"], and he asked to meet me... I said, 'Oh, my gosh, Tony Bennett's here.' And I was so nervous. I fixed my hair, and my mom was fixing her makeup. We went back to meet him, and he said, 'Do you want to do a jazz album together?' I said, 'Yes, of course I do.' And we were fast friends and friends ever since."
Shedding some light on the songs included on the new release, Bennett offers, ""It's all the great songs of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, all the greatest composers... No other country has ever given the rest of the world so many magnificent songs, and they're gonna live forever. Wait 'til you find out when she sings those songs."
As for how Bennett sees Gaga, the crooner shares, "She phrases like I phrase... She's a wonderful singer. Everybody knows and loves her very much. I think when they hear this album that we're doing, they're going to say, 'We had no idea that she sings that well.'"

Of note, Bennett and Gaga previously collaborated on a duet of the classic "The Lady Is A Tramp" for Bennett's bestselling DUETS II album. New footage of that recording session was recently released and it was covered in a BroadwayWorld article here.
