L.A. Catalina Bar & Grill Presents Barbara Morrison's A TRIBUTE TO DINAH WASHINGTON, 7/8

Catalina Bar & Grill will present Barbara Morrison in “A Tribute To Dinah Washington," the "Queen of the Blues." Renowned jazz and blues singer Morrison will be accompanied by The Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center All-Star Big Band and directed by John Stephens for one night only. The performance will be presented on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at Catalina Bar & Grill; 6725 West Sunset Boulevard (just east of North Highland Avenue); Los Angeles, Calif. There is $25 Cover Charge per person. Valet Parking is available.

Members of the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center All-Star Big Band will include: Ron Barrows, Cindy Lee Bradley, Tom Bridges, Bram Glik, George Harper, Ron Hershew, Jeff Kaye, Mel Lee, Paul Nowell, Tom Ralls, Carl Randell, Tom Scott, Curt Sletten, Alvin Starks and Oliver Steinberg.

Morrison’s song list will include a bevy of signature songs popularized by Dinah Washington including: “What a Diff’rence a Day Makes,” “This Bitter Earth,” “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “Teach Me Tonight,” “You Go To My Head,” “If It’s The Last Thing I Do,” “You Been A Good Old Wagon” and many more.

Barbara Morrison was raised in Romulus, MI. She logged her first performance on radio in Detroit at the age of 10. Since then, she has toured the world, dazzling fans with her two-and-a-half-octave range, in a wide array of genres from traditional Jazz and Blues to Gospel and Pop. Morrison has been featured on over 20 recordings. Over the years she has performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of the Jazz and Blues worlds: Gerald Wilson, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, James Moody, Ron Carter, Etta James, Esther Phillips and many others. Morrison has also guest starred with the Count Basie Orchestra, the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra and Doc Severinsen’s Big Band. She has performed at Blues and Jazz Festivals around the world, including Montreaux, Nice, Pori, Carnegie Hall, North Sea and Monterey. She is the creator and director of the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center in the Leimert Park area of Los Angeles.

The legendary Dinah Washington was born Ruth Lee Jones on August 29, 1924. She has been cited as the most popular black female recording artist of the 1950s and has been called “The Queen of the Blues.” In 1959 she won a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Performance for “What a Diff’rence a Day Makes.” She passed away on December 14, 1963, and was posthumously inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1986 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
