Kelly Bowlin And The Orphans today announced the January 13, 2017 release of 'Are You Listening', an 18-song compilation of their amazingly varied yet always rockin' songs.
Described as "the best alt-country act you've never heard of" and more succinctly as "ugly country," the band celebrates its 15-year-and-counting run with this selection of 14 previously released and 4 brand new cuts, including their new single, a wistful rumination on times gone by titled "You Can Never Go Home."
With this release, singer, guitarist and mandolin player Bowlin (who calls his band "a roots-rock/Americana act trapped in
Southern California,") joins vocalist/keyboardist/guitarist Russell Berkley, vocalist/guitarist Dan Miller and drummer/percussionist Jim Moreland on a dazzling variety of live and studio performances. The sound ranges from a stone-pure bluegrass original ("Break the Chain") to a gently romantic reverie ("Dancing in a Hurricane") and a righteously furious sermon on homelessness in America, lacerated by slashes of electric guitar ("Thanksgiving Day") and all musical and lyrical points in-between and beyond.
"It's 'Steve Earle meets the Who, or Gram Parsons playing a mandolin through a Marshall Stack," Bowlin insists. "Our sound is raw, high-energy, growling vocals, most certainly un-homogenized."
