Not since 2011 has a rap album made as big a splash on the Billboard Charts with Drake's 'Take Care' but Kanye West has once again proven he is a Rap God. Billboard is reporting that 'Yeezus', West's sixth solo album has sold 327,000 copies in its first week.
'Yeezus' is West's fifth chart topping album, the only one that missed the top spot was his debut 'The College Dropout.' That album only reached the number 2 spot when it was released back in 2004. The only rap artists to match Kanye's five number 1's are Eminem and Nas. West's mentor and 'Watch the Throne' collaborator, Jay-Z, leads with 12 number 1's. It's safe to say that Kanye is in good company.
It has the third largest sales week of the year putting it behind only Justin Timberlake's 'The 20/20 Experience' and Daft Punk's 'Random Access Memories.' Despite the strong sales numbers, it was the lowest sales debut for a solo album from Kanye. All of his previous efforts have totaled more than 400,000. His only non-number 1, 'The College Dropout', managed to get 441,000 in its debut week.
Before its release, many had predicted it would sell more than 500,000 copies. By release day, that number fell to between 360,000 and 380,000. By the end of last week that number fell again to between 330,000 and 340,000.
