The faint whiff of cologne lingering on an old shirt evokes painful memories in Kaitlyn Baker's "To Pieces," the singer's latest single to be released to country radio.
Heartbreaking and beautiful, the ballad draws the listener in, with its stirring melody and lyrics about lost love. An accompanying music video follows Baker on a slow walk through autumn woods. A gentle rain falls like tears, as she reminisces about the man who left: "Time goes by, I can't shake this pain," Baker sings, "I thought from down the hallway I heard you call my name."
Here's a link to the song's official video.
Devastated by a personal breakup, Baker found solace writing "To Pieces" with Janet Miller and J. Scott Arnold, who also produced the record.
"I had been in relationship with someone for quite a while," Baker said. "When we parted ways, I was heartbroken. I called my friend, Janet Miller, who is a great songwriter. She was encouraging and we poured our hearts into this song. It really helped me get over a tough time."
"To Pieces" is one of six tracks on Baker's "Coal Train" EP, which also includes her singles "Burn" and "Coal Train," the latter of which was selected for the 2015 Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards ZinePak CD. The single is being released to radio stations, in collaboration with Play MPE and GrassRoots Promotion.
The release of "To Pieces" comes on the heels of Baker's "Heart of Appalachia," which was adopted as the official theme song for tourism in her native Southwest Virginia.
