Grammy Award-Winning composer, Julie Gold, the writer of Bette Midler's hit song FROM A DISTANCE, comes to Cherry Hill, NJ and performs in concert at Congregation M'kor Shalom, 850 Evesham Road in Cherry Hill ,NJ on Sunday, April 19 at 7 p.m. This program is underwritten by the Helen & Leon Weinberg Scholar-in-Residence Endowment Fund and is only $10 a ticket.
In a concert titled "Julie Gold: Sharing Songs and Stories", Gold presents a musical journey through her life in music and words. While she's a New York City resident, she has many stories that reflect her roots in the Delaware Valley. A Philadelphia area native, she has longtime friends at M'kor Shalom, including Cantor Anita Hochman whom she met at summer camp, Camp Harlem. Not only does she have friends and family still living in Philadelphia and South Jersey, her beloved piano teacher, Rae Goldberg lives in Voorhees in Lions Gate Retirement Community. She credits Mrs. Goldberg often and says that she is "by my side every time I sit at a piano."
Julie Gold is best known for the huge popularity of Bette Midler's version of her song, FROM A DISTANCE, which won her the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1991. That song has since received close to four million air plays and has been given many honors, including being recited in the Congressional Record by Senator Barbara Boxer. Nanci Griffith was the first to record FROM A DISTANCE and she has also covered Gold's songs HEAVEN, SOUTHBOUND TRAIN, GOODNIGHT NEW YORK, MOUNTAIN OF SORROW and LOVE IS LOVE IS LOVE. Other artists who have recorded Gold's songs include Patti LaBelle, Patti LuPone, Lea Salonga, Andrea Marcovicci, Kathie Lee Gifford and many others. Her music has also been featured in films. Her song THANKS TO YOU was in the movie ANDRE and her song DREAM LOUD was in the Richard Gere film, UNFAITHFUL. Gold delights in the fact her song DREAM LOUD is a favorite of the Girl Scouts of America and that they paid her in Girl Scout Cookies!
Gold is proud to have four CD's documenting her work over the years titled Dream Loud, Try Love, The Girl I Found and Love is Love is Love. Currently she is writing songs for the Oxford University Press for a series that teaches English to elementary school children all over the world. As the daughter of an immigrant, she sees this as her most meaningful endeavor to date. She has served on the Board of Governors for NARAS, the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences, and she is a guest artist for Lincoln Center's prestigious Meet the Artist Series. Gold performs and gives motivational speeches throughout the country.
