The Alden's 2015-2016 season begins at 8 p.m. tonight, Oct. 17, with a performance by award-winning Celtic singer and multi-instrumentalist Julie Fowlis, who performs primarily in the rarely heard language of Scottish Gaelic. Tickets are $35/$20 for MCC district residents. The Alden is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue, inside the McLean Community Center.
Fowlis's intoxicating vocals and music are deeply influenced by her early upbringing in the Outer Hebridean island of North Uist, Scotland. She is most recognized for singing the theme song to "Brave," Disney Pixar's Oscar-, Golden Globe- and BAFTA-winning animated film, set in the ancient highlands of Scotland. The track was a worldwide smash hit and was nominated for an Oscar in 2013. She also has collaborated, recorded and performed with such artists as violin virtuoso Nicola Benedetti, acclaimed singer
Aled Jones and Grammy-Award winners
James Taylor and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Fowlis was nominated "Folk Singer of the Year" at the 2015 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and "Best Artist" at the Songlines World Music Awards 2015. She made history as the first Gaelic solo artist to win a Scottish Music Award in December 2014.
