Austin-based indie singer-songwriter Johnny Goudie is gearing up for the release of his solo EP "Leper Hands" this Thursday, Sept. 13 and his official EP release show at One-2-One Bar also on Sept. 13. Doors for this show are at 7 p.m., with the soulful Aaron Stephens opening at 7:30 p.m. and Johnny Goudie on at 8:30 p.m. Austin pop musician Sarah Dossey and Shy Beast vocalist MC Glaeser will also be singing backup for Goudie at this show. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here. Goudie will also be performing for HAAM Benefit Day at Antone's Record Shop tomorrow, Sept. 11, at 4:30 p.m. The info for this show can be found here. Johnny's new, four-track EP heavily features his own piano playing, mixing in vintage guitars and dynamic drum beats with his smooth indie-rock vocals. "The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians has helped thousands of musicians get affordable health care," said Johnny Goudie. "HAAM Day is the biggest fundraising day of the year and I'm honored to be a part of it."

Goudie has also released a special episode of his podcast How Did I Get Here? which features himself as the interviewee - Austin renowned musician Eric Tessmer steps into the host seat to interview Goudie about "Leper Hands," and their chat can be found here.

"This EP is a modern take on a classic songwriter record," said Goudie about the release. "Think '70s Fleetwood Mac meets 'The White Album'-era Beatles."

Since his last solo release "El Payaso" in 2009, Goudie has been working away, playing over 100 shows a year in Supergroup cover band, SKYROCKET!, as well as starting two other bands, Liars & Saints and Johnny In The Ladies Room. In 2018, Goudie found himself writing in new creative ways, such as constructing a song based on only a title - the title track of the EP, "Leper Hands" came out of this exercise, with Goudie drawing inspiration from everything from carnivals to his own history and personal conflicts.

"These songs are me just dealing with life, you know," said Goudie. "No overriding message, just bits of life with some songs set at carnivals."

"Leper Hands" was recorded in three days in January 2018 at Church House Studios and The Congress House. The EP features Goudie on vocals, piano and keyboards, Scrappy Jud Newcomb on guitar, Sean Crooks on bass and John Chipman on drums. The four had come together last August as the house band at the Dudley & Bob 25th Anniversary Show and had such a good time playing together that they teamed up again in 2018 to hit the studio and record Goudie's new songs. This EP marks the first time Goudie has had a "producer" since the '90s, with Newcomb taking on the role. Together, the band showcases a newer, simplistic musical style than Goudie's heavier rock past, with Johnny only playing the keyboards rather than his trademark guitar.

"We made sure that songs held up with just me playing very simple piano and singing to ensure the strength of the songs," said Goudie. "That was also a great bonding time for Scrappy and I. We put some parameters on ourselves. The atmosphere while recording, even though it was quick, it was relaxed, we had a lot of fun being together."

Goudie and his band are also joined by a couple of special guests, renowned local musicians Jane Ellen Bryant and Jaimee Harris, who perform backing vocals on the EP, adding an extra dimension to the tracks.

"After the band recorded the music and I sang all of my lead vocals, Scrappy thought it might be nice to have some female voices singing with me," said Goudie about the EP's guests. "I am very close friends with Jane Ellen Bryant and Jaimee Harris and they sing together all the time and sound so beautiful, so it was a very obvious choice. When we got their voices on this record, it gave the music such a gorgeous color. They sound like angels."

"LEPER HANDS" TRACKLIST IS AS FOLLOWS:

  1. Everyone's Got Something
  2. What Do You Say
  3. Luna Park
  4. Leper Hands
