KINAN AZMEH
September 3 at 7:30 PM
$20

Syrian clarinetist and composer Kinan Azmeh is the first Arab to win the first prize at the Nicolay Rubinstein international competition in Moscow1997. A graduate of the Juilliard School in New York, the High Institute of Music and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Damascus. He is currently working towards his music doctoral degree at the City University of New York. Kinan has appeared as soloist, composer and improviser worldwide including The Library of Congress, The Kennedy Center, Opera Bastille, Berlin's Philharmonie, The Mozarteum, Carnegie Hall, UN's General Assembly and the Damascus Opera for its opening concert. He has shared the stage and recorded with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Daniel Barenboim, Marcel Khalife, Aynur and Zakir Hussein. Formed in 2006 in New York City, Kinan Azmeh & and his New York Quartet immediately gained recognition for their virtuosic and high energy performance, receiving praise from critics and audiences alike. With this New York ensemble, Azmeh strives to reach a balance between Jazz, classical music, and the music of his homeland, Syria. Azmeh's expressive clarinet meets Kyle Sanna's rustic guitar, soaring at times over the dynamic and volatile backdrop of John Hadfield's percussion and Josh Myers' double bass. The new album "Elastic City" was launched in a European and Middle-eastern tour in the summer of 2012.

LOS HACHEROS
September 3 at 9:30 PM
$12

Since joining forces in 2011, Los Hacheros have been setting dance floors aflame with their astounding live shows. Now with the release of their debut album, Pilon, they are ready to introduce to the world their revelatory new sound. Recorded live onto a classic 388 Tascam tape machine, Pilon captures a gritty soulfulness that has been absent far too long from modern latin music. Combining the raw emotion of Papote Jimenez's vocals, Eddie Venegas and Itai Kriss' powerful mambos, and Jacob Plasse's psychedelic tres guitar, Los Hacheros have a created a sound that is both unique and timeless. On Pilon, one hears echoes of legends such as Ray Barretto, Fania, and Arsenio Rodriguez, but with an immediacy and power that is unmistakably New York now.

TELLY SAVALAS LIVE!
September 4 at 9:30 PM
$20

Written by New York's Hunter Nelson and Directed by Taylor Negron (Fast Times at Ridgemont High) Telly Savalas Live! is a devilishly smart and hugely funny blast from America's hairy-chested past. Actor Tom DiMenna plays Telly Savalas, channeling the unmistakable chutzpah of the long dead Greek-American celebrity with pitch-perfect gravitas and impeccable comic timing. It's the resurrection nobody was expecting: 1970s Hollywood icon Telly Savalas has risen from the grave to give the cynical and overstimulated youth of today a good kick in the pants in "Telly Savalas Live!", a hilarious and surreal lounge act. This big, bald, improbably stylish ladies' man has moved beyond "Kojak," beyond the Dirty Dozen, beyond his instructional VHS series on no limit blackjack -- indeed beyond the land of the living entirely. He's been watching us very closely from the Other Side, and here's the verdict: We're doing it wrong. TV, movies, men's wear, haircuts, heavy petting -- You name it, we've blown it. Now, Telly will rise from the dead to personally administer his antidote to our perpetual state of cultural coitus interruptus (hint: it involves some angry sermonizing and several bizarre interpretations of classic pop songs and standards)!
