For its 21st album, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey reaches into the dark annals of its hometown's history and emerges with a masterwork: The Race Riot Suite (2011). Written, arranged, and orchestrated by Chris Combs, the album is a long-form conceptual piece that tells the devastating story of the 1921 Tulsa race riot – a real estate-driven ethnocide occurring under the guise of citizen-dispensed justice. The oil-elite, civic government and local press colluded to take advantage of a racially tense climate in Jim Crow-era Oklahoma, resulting in the death of hundreds of black Tulsans and the destruction of an entire city district. Tonight, the JFJO will perform selections from the suite – a work The Boston Globe declared "a beautifully orchestrated, melodically rich piece that celebrates Greenwood as much as it laments the wanton violence that destroyed the neighborhood."

Inspired at an early age by artists like Public Enemy, Eric B. and Rakim, Grammy-nominated drummer Adam Deitch began his production career by making loops on a tape deck in his bedroom. He has gone on to produce tracks for some of today's top emcees, including 50 Cent, Redman, Talib Kweli, KRS-One, and Jurassic 5. Deitch has done major session work on drums for artists including Justin Timberlake, Daniel Bedingfield, Anthony Hamilton, and Black Rob. He has also made recent appearances with The Game, Slick Rick, Lauryn Hill, GZA of Wu-Tang Clan, Dead Prez, the Ying Yang Twins, John Medeski, and Meshell Ndegeocello. A regular member of Wyclef Jean's band and the Average White Band, he has also recorded and toured with jazz legend John Scofield. Tonight Deitch steps into the spotlight as a bandleader performing his own tunes.

A New Jersey native, guitarist Vic Juris discovered jazz as a teenager and made his recorded debut in 1975 with saxophonist Eric Kloss. In the late '70s and '80s, he worked with Barry Miles, Richie Cole, Larry Coryell, and Biréli Lagrène before joining bassist Gary Peacock's group in the late '80s. In 1991, he joined Dave Liebman's outfit and celebrated 20 years with the group just last year. The gig affords Juris considerable creative freedom. "Dave is into doing a wide variety of stuff and he pretty much gives me the green light to do whatever I want," he says. In addition to his sideman work, Juris has led an extensive solo career, recording numerous albums for Muse, SteepleChase, and other prominent jazz labels. Among his latest releases are Bohemia (2006), Omega is the Alpha (2010), and Listen Here (2011). Today’s show features standards and originals by Vic and Kate Baker (vocals) with accompaniment by Harvie S (bass), and Anthony Pinciotti (drums).

Dynamic pianist, multi-keyboardist, and composer Marc Cary has emerged on the cutting-edge NY scene as one of the most exciting and innovative players around. The Washington, D.C. native moved to New York after graduating from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts at 21. A highly versatile musician, Cary has been compared to the likes of Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington, and Randy Weston. Alternately percussive and suave, animated and introspective, Cary balances energy and lyricism with a depth of expression. Cary's extensive credits include jazz legends Art Taylor, Betty Carter, and Abbey Lincoln, with whom he has received Grammy nominations. He has recently been working with Stephon Harris' Blackout. As The New York Times writes, Cary is “going his own way and ready to lead.” Cary has always been one to return to his roots. His upcoming release Focus brings him back to the acoustic piano setting, with new fresh new material and an explosive new rhythm section, David Ewell (acoustic bass), and Sameer Gupta (drums, tabla).
