Join JAZZSTOCK's for its next concert today, February 27 with 2012 NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan in duo with longtime collaborator bassist Cameron Brown.
Did you know that Sheila was asked to sing with the great Charlie Parker? In Sheila's words: There were many times that Bird (Charlie Parker) asked me to sit in with him on a couple of tunes. He always let me pick the tunes I wanted to sing and he would solo on them. It was the thrill of my life and continues to be. I was a kid and he knew how much I loved his music. As I said before, Bird was like my big brother.
Detroit native Sheila Jordan is one of the most widely acclaimed jazz vocalists in the world! Throughout her career she has been recognized as the innovator of the Bass and Voice DUO. Even at 87 years old, this jazz singing veteran continues to showcase the remarkable relationship between the Bass and the Voice through live performances and recordings. Sheila and Cameron will be joined by vocalist Teri Roiger & bassist John Menegon, who have been working in the Bass & Voice format since meeting 25 years ago!
The concert is set for Saturday, February 27 (7:30 pm) at Woodstock Community Center, 56 Rock City Road, Woodstock, NY. Tickets: $30 general admission / $40 seating first two rows. Purchase tickets online at www.jazzstock.com, by calling 845-802-0029 (leave a message to make reservations), or email jazzstock@earthlink.net.
Sheila "sat in" with Charlie Parker and eventually married his pianist, Duke Jordan. She drew national attention with her recording of You Are My Sunshine with George Russell, and in 1962, she became the first vocalist signed to Blue Note Records. When you hear her sing Sheila's Blues, a song that recounts an early encounter with Charlie Parker in the Motor City, it is something you will never forget! Each time is a little different, and always extremely heartfelt.
Sheila, at 87 years old, is at the top of her game and is in more demand now than ever!! She is traveling the world spreading joy through her music, and just recently returned from an award ceremony in Austria, where she received the highest award an artist can receive in Austria for her excellence in music! Last summer she sang an amazing set with Jack DeJohnette on piano, a highlight of the annual Festival of the Voice in Phoenicia.
Bassist Cameron Brown anchored some of the most important groups of the seventies, eighties and nineties, with Don Cherry, George Russell, Sheila Jordan, Roswell Rudd, Archie Shepp, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, Ed Blackwell...the list goes on!
For the last part of the performance, Sheila, Cameron, Teri & John will collaborate on a "foursome" with the music they all love! After having all played together at Peggy Stern's Wall Street Jazz Festival in Kingston last year, this collaboration just had to be continued! It will be a night to remember! Teri has an intuitive laid back sense of time reminiscent of Abbey Lincoln & Betty Carter but with her own uniqueness. John Menegon (long time bassist for David "Fathead" Newman & Dewey Redman) is in the line of George Mraz & Michael Moore; a harmonically sophisticated bassist with technical facility who swings hard when it's called for. 2014 Downbeat!
JAZZSTOCK be selling $3 raffle tickets for signed CDs, plus a recently-released award-winning biography of Sheila: JAZZ CHILD: A Portrait of Sheila Jordan! Sheila will be available for "signing" after the concert.
