Hair Puller's debut full-length Old Friend will be released on vinyl on November 16, 2018 on Nadine Records and cassette on Accident Prone Records. You can hear the title track now (see NPR premiere). NPR says Hair Puller's "101 MPH sludge will pulverize your headbanging skull." Give it a try and find out!
Hair Puller started with an equally pretentious and vague Craigslist ad titled "Looking for Drummer to start Post-Metal/Sludge/Shoegaze/Slowcore Band" posted late summer of 2015 by Eric Leavell. The ad was answered by Steve Seal and Ledena Mattox who were looking for a guitar player who would exclusively play "pimply James Hetfield-style" riffs. After slamming back a few Tecates, it was clear that they had found their pimply-faced unicorn. Drawing from diverse personal influences, and three main goals of writing "big dumb riffs", "songs primarily composed of palm mutes", and to "play like our asses are on fire", Hair Puller was formed.
September 2016 saw the release of their Demo (later re-released as a split cassette with Dead Tropics) at local music festival, Ceremony of Sludge. Hair Puller returned to the studio in October 2017, recording drums at Stop / Start with friend and scene-mate Robert Comitz of Marriage + Cancer, and recording the rest themselves over the next several months. The resulting 10 songs were mixed by guitarist Eric Leavell, and mastered by Julian Silva of On Air Mastering.
Old Friend represents the breadth of what Hair Puller does: blistering barn-burners, chuggy rockers, and tense dissonant sludge all wrapped up in a chaotic and unavoidable package.
