Fresh off work on Fox Searchlight's feature film BLACK NATIVITY starring Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whitaker and Mary J. Blige - and directed by Kasi Lemmons - Otis Sallid, the creator of SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE, brings an exciting new musical project to life, HARLEM'S BIG OTIS JUMP UP BLUES REVUE. The REVUE will make it's home at Ginny's Supper Club located in Marcus Samuelsson's popular Red Rooster Harlem, (310 Lenox Avenue). Performances are scheduled every Thursday night, two shows - 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., August 15, 22, 29, 2013.
HARLEM'S BIG OTIS JUMP UP BLUES REVUE features the music of Big Joe Turner, Julia Lee, Duke Ellington, Joe Liggins, La Vern Baker and Nellie Lutcher, and is steeped in the tradition of speakeasy shows that became popular during the rise of the Harlem Renaissance, performed in after-hour joints all across the midwest and east coast.
Sugar dancing poppas, hip shaking mommas and Saturday night boogie-woogie men, HARLEM'S BIG OTIS JUMP UP BLUES REVUE is bound to have you jumping right out of your seat. A talented cast of six dynamic musical theatre performers has been assembled, including: EuGene Fleming (Billy Elliot: THE MUSICAL, NEVER GONNA DANCE, THE LOOK OF LOVE, ONE MO' TIME), singer, actress Lillias White (FELA!, HAIR, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, CROWNS, FUNNY GIRL, DREAMGIRLS, THE LIFE, CHICAGO, HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS, CATs, BARNUM), Grammy nominee Tamar Davis, Roz Beauty, Milton Vann and piano man Steven A. Taylor with the stylish vocal direction of Contrella Patrick-Henry. This tight-knit ensemble breathes life into each song and keeps the energy high from start to finish.
Many say Harlem is currently undergoing a second renaissance, and demand for diverse nighttime entertainment to accommodate the influx of tourist traffic is apparent. With HARLEM'S BIG OTIS JUMP UP BLUES REVUE, Sallid hopes to wet the appetite and quench the thirst for nostalgia that draws so many to this historic New York community. And what better place to do it but in partnership with Chef Samuelsson's world renown Red Rooster Harlem, named after the legendary Harlem speakeasy once located at 138th and 7th Avenue that drew the likes of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Nat King Cole and James Baldwin through its doors.
Today, Red Rooster Harlem has become a positive influence in the community, designed to be a place where people from near and far come to celebrate food, music, history, culture and art. A perfect fit for respected director-producer-choreographer, Otis Sallid to bring his vision to life.
In addition to HARLEM'S BIG OTIS JUMP UP BLUES REVUE, Mr. Sallid is currently working on various other projects in different stages of development, including THE JAmes Brown PROJECT - GET ON THE GOOD FOOT, premiering at The Apollo Theatre, October 24.
