As one grows into adulthood, remaining steadfastly single-minded about one's pursuits gets increasingly difficult. The musician becomes a band mate navigating the creative energies of those around them. He becomes a boyfriend, a husband, a businessman. She becomes a lover, a mother, a practitioner of her art. Life becomes multifarious, and the pressure to not let the disparate threads of a chaotic life unravel can cause strain on any relationship. With his new album Minnesota, Mason Jennings crafts a collage of love trying to survive the transition into being a grown-up in a complex world. Read more here.

SIR MIX-A-LOT

("Baby Got Back" hip hop innovator / Open Dance Floor)
Fri, Nov 15, 10:30pm
Sir Mix-A-Lot parlayed a gonzo tribute to women with large buttocks into hip-hop immortality. But even before he struck crossover gold, Sir Mix-A-Lot was one of rap's great D.I.Y. success stories. Coming from a city - Seattle - with barely any hip-hop scene to speak of, Mix-A-Lot co-founded his own record label, promoted his music himself, produced all his own tracks, and essentially pulled himself up by the proverbial American bootstraps. Even before "Baby Got Back," Mix-A-Lot was a platinum-selling album artist with a strong following in the hip-hop community, known for bouncy, danceable, bass-heavy tracks indebted to old-school electro. However, it took signing with Rick Rubin's Def American label - coupled with an exaggerated, parodic pimp image - to carry him into the mainstream. Perceived as a one-hit novelty, he found it difficult to follow his breakout success, but kept on recording, and even toured as part of a rap-rock supergroup called Subset, a collaboration with the Presidents of the United States of America. Jorge Ben Jor (born March 22, 1942 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian popular musician. His characteristic style fuses samba, funk, and rock into samba-rock, with lyrics that blend humor and satire with often esoteric subject matter. Born Jorge Duilio Lima Menezes, he initially took the stage name Jorge Ben after his mother's name (of Ethiopian origin) but later changed it to Jorge Ben Jor (commonly written Benjor), allegedly in response to an incident where some of his royalties had accidentally gone to American guitarist George Benson.

The history of the Septeto Nacional is closely associated with one musician - who if he were a Pope for Cuban Son would long since have been canonized - Ignacio Piñeiro, an excellent sonero, singer and composer lived in Pueblo Nuevo, the black quarter of the city. Even as a child, Ignacio Piñeiro sang in choirs and played drums with the Afro-Cuban cabildos. Then he formed his own first line up, Los Roncos, the Hoarse Ones, for which he composed choir music. In 1926, he played bass with the Sexteto Occidente, whose leader was Maria Teresa Vera. Read more here.

John Waters' one-man spoken-word show is a "vaudeville" act that celebrates the film career and obsessional tastes of the man William Burroughs once called "The Pope of Trash." B. and Arnetta; the three sisters known as "The Edward Sisters." The group consisted of Bridgette and Lynette's mother, Lois and her two sisters Arnette and Inez. With high regards for their fore parents' musical history, Bridgette and Lynette state that it has been their mother, Lois E. Bailey, an accomplished pianist, who has influenced them the most. As young children, were given piano lessons and began singing in the Providence Baptist Church Juniorette Choir and went on to join the Youth and Young Adult Choir. ("The conscience of hip hop" ~Rolling Stone / Open Dance Floor)
Thu, Dec 5, 10:30pm, 18+
$25
Every culture produces its own "keeper." Every culture produces its own principles, its own history, its own advocates, and its own prophet pointing the way to a higher quality of life. For the urban-street culture known in the world today as "Hip Hop," KRS-One is all of the above. Appearing on the rap scene in 1986 as Boogie Down Productions releasing his first hit single "South Bronx" with the late DJ Scott La Rock, KRS "the one" made it clear that Hip Hop was going to have to take itself a lot more serious. - with special guest Dave Nachmanoff)
Fri, Dec 6, 8pm
$24 adv, $28 door
Ask Al Stewart to sum up where he is now, musically speaking, and you're likely to wind up two steps behind where you started; this is by no means an unusual circumstance in conversation with Al, keenly aware as he is that making a leap forward often entails taking a step backward. Sometimes it's into the library stacks where the late historian Ms. Tuchman dug for material. Sometimes it's into the record stacks where the late rocker Mr. Cochran made his mark as a teenager singing his "Summertime Blues" so many summertime's ago. Read more here.

Their live shows involved mock bondage rituals, simulated sex, 12-foot high rock stars by the name of Quay Lude singing 'White Punks On Dope', exploding televisions, chainsaws and an array of semi-clad dancers. Some say they were about 15 years ahead of Madonna, and light years ahead of the politically correct. Read more here.

Following a brief stint with Billy Cobham's powerhouse fusion band from 1979 to 1980, he moved to New York City, where he was recruited by MiLes Davis to play a key role in Miles' celebrated comeback band of 1981 (which also included bassist Marcus Miller, drummer Al Foster, percussionist Mino Cinelu and saxophonist Bill Evans). During his three-year period with Miles, Stern appeared on three recordings with the jazz maestro - Man with the Horn, Star People and the live We Want Miles. TUCK & PATTI
(Husband and wife jazz duo extraordinaire)

Wed-Thu, Dec 11, 12, 8pm
Wed, 8pm $22
Thu, 8pm $23
Vocalist Patti Cathcart and guitarist Tuck Andress have been a steady performing duo for so long now, going on three decades, that it's somewhat surprising that I Remember You-their new T&P Records recording, licensed to Universal Music-zeroes in on the Great American Songbook. Surely they've already recorded their take on these enduring standards. But no, it just seems so, seems as if everything they've written and recorded is already a standard. In their 11 previous releases, only a handful of tunes would fall under the typical, pre-rock era, standards banner. Read more here.
