Free Concert By YPC of NYC Satellite Schools Held at 92nd St Y 5/20

The Young People's Chorus of New York City (YPC) will shine the spotlight on the children who participate in the chorus's Satellite program in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Queens schools in a free concert to be held at the 92nd Street Y on Thursday, May 20, at 11 a.m. No tickets are required.

The children in the eight Satellite schools have been practicing throughout the school year for this annual event and will be led by their instructors-YPC conductors Elizabeth Núñez, Amy Kotsonis, Sophia Miller; and Jon Holden, who is also the YPC's principal pianist.

The concert opens with all of the Satellite School children joining together in singing Aaron Copland's Ching-a-Ring Chaw. Then, each chorus will sing individually. Afterwards, composer Jim Papoulis will lead the children in a special song-writing workshop. They will all brainstorm to create a musical phrase that will be melded it into lyrics based on the children's ideas. The song will then be written on a board onstage, so that everyone in the concert hall can sing it together.

The concert closes with all joining together in singing "Give Us Hope," the powerful childhood anthem composed for the YPC by Jim Papoulis, to his piano accompaniment.

Young People's Chorus of New York City Satellite Schools Program

The Young People's Chorus of New York City established its Satellite Schools program in September 2003 in association with the Department of Education of New York City to provide its choral music education program to hundreds of young people in New York City schools.

YPC Satellite chorus students are taught to read and write music, learn interpretative disciplines and healthy vocal skills, and to sing in unison and in two- and three-part harmony. Each YPC Satellite chorus is prepared to perform at in-school assemblies and events throughout the year and are also be invited to participate in scheduled YPC performances. The high point of the school year is the gathering of all Satellite Schools chorus members this Satellite concert at the 92nd Street Y, where YPC is in residence.
