"In addition to being a highly respected composer and conductor, the many-talented Frenchman Thomas Roussel has also made music for mega fashion houses like Dior, Kenzo and Chanel - assuring that the clothes sound as good as they look. Under the sobriquet Prequell, he also conjures compositions that strikingly blur the lines between electronic and classical music - the latest collection of which will be gathered for the upcoming album The Future Comes Before. In anticipation, we have the first single, the awesomely cinematic "Part XIV," with its visceral, dramatic sweep of strings, and featuring a powerfully moving vocal by British songstress Rae Morris." -- Ken Scudato, BlackBook (6/30/17)
France's PREQUELL is a Haute
Couture protégé who has created music for prestigious brands such as Chanel, Dior, Kenzo, Michael Kors and Nike as well as composed, orchestrated and arranged for electronic music icon Jeff Mills. Signed to UMF/Pantheon
Musique (home to Møme and Fred Falke), he will release his debut album THE FUTURE COMES BEFORE on
September 29. The first single "Part XIV" Feat.
Rae Morris is released today, June 30. The album's pre-order begins July 7.
Somewhere between classical and electronic, cinematic symphony and electro anthems, beautiful orchestrations and modernity, PREQUELL's THE FUTURE COMES BEFORE is a blend of remarkable instrumental tracks and rich young interpreters' voices such as Rae Morris, Claire Laffut, Fyfe,
Shy Girls and Cruel Youth, embracing his pop music ambition. Says PREQUELL, "I imagined 'Part XIV' as a powerful pop duet between the
London Symphony Orchestra and the singer Rae Morris. This track as a kind of British accent. Rae has this magical voice (which reminds me of Björk) and she has found some very mysterious colors in her voice and melodies."
PREQUELL--who is Thomas Roussel--recorded his debut album in the legendary Abbey Road
Studio One with two of the greatest world symphonic orchestras: the London Symphonic Orchestra (Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Beatles) and Isobel Griffith's orchestra (Adele,
Massive Attack, Hans Zimmer). He enlisted a five-star ***** star cast of players and contributors including drummer Ben Thompson (Two Door Cinema Club, Phoenix); Stéphane Reichart (Alexandre Desplat, Woodkid) who was in charge of recording and engineering the two great orchestras with the finest precision; and for mixing purposes, multi-GRAMMY Award winner Steve Fitzmaurice(Depeche Mode, U2, Sam Smith).
The album sees actual sounds from space woven in: a NASA probe entering the magnetosphere of
Jupiter (« Part XV »), gravitational waves emitted by two merging black holes (« Part XIII ») and the standing wave tone of
Planet Earth (« Part IV »)."Part V" is featured in Mugler's new worldwide fragrance campaign for Aura. Says PREQUELL: "'Part V' opens with a short strings explosion. As it's the very first track that I did as Prequell, I wanted this intro to contains all the Prequell's harmonic DNA, like in the
Big Bang theory." He adds: "Then, the idea of the track is a duet between metal (anvil sounds) and wood (drums), a very organic battle, harmonized by beautiful strings, and a deep and powerful beat. The very lyric violin melody warms the coldness of the metal."
