Tony Award winner Cyndi Lauper goes country on her upcoming album 'Detour', dropping May 6th. (Pre-order on iTunes HERE). Today PEOPLE has shared an exclusive first listen of "Funnel of Love," the debut single off the crossover LP. Check it out HERE!

The song was originally recorded in 1961 by Wanda Jackson.

"A lot of songs on this record are from that period of country-western music right before rock & roll came along," Lauper tells PEOPLE. "I studied a lot of singers, and Wanda Jackson, who originally sang this, was one of the original rock & rollers. I wanted this song to have that live sound, and it does."

The project marks the 11th full-length album for the 62 year old music icon who was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame last year/ The album features country legends Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Vince Gill, Jewel and Alison Krauss covering classics from the genre.

Lauper earned a Tony Award in 2012 for scoring the hit Broadway musical KINKY BOOTS. The singer exploded on the scene in the '80s as a trend-setting pop star with hit songs like "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "She Bop" and "Time After Time." She's gone on to sell more than 50 million albums in a career that spans four decades and multiple genres.
