This fall actress and singer Emily Bergl, star of Broadway, films, and "Desperate Housewives," garnered raves from critics and sold out audiences for her debut cabaret at the Oak Room. Stephen Holden of the NY Times declared Ms. Bergl to be "a natural stage entertainer who suggests a multiple exposure of Carol Burnett, Bette Midler and Madonna, without really resembling any of them" and "a gust of fresh air that could knock you off your feet." By popular demand, Ms. Bergl will reprise her cabaret show, "Kidding on the Square," for five Monday nights only, November 21 through December 19 at the Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel.
"Kidding on the Square," directed by Sarna Lapine, is a vintage cabaret told from the perspective of a modern girl. Jonathan Mastro, composer of the hit NY revival of "Our Town," musical directs and accompanies on the piano. In her stunning debut, Ms. Bergl blows the roof off the traditional cabaret style, slyly twisting classic favorites with unique interpretations of modern pop. Audiences are treated to an evening of songs by Noel Coward, Fats Waller, The Scissor Sisters, Lily Allen, and Madonna, all weaved together for an rollicking evening of old and new fashioned entertainment.
Ms. Bergl starred as Beth Young on ABC's "Desperate Housewives," and currently plays Tammi Bryant on TNT's "Southland," in addition to guest stars on "Royal Pains" and "Hawaii 5-0" this season. She most recently appeared on the New York stage in Nora Ephron's "Love, Loss and What I Wore," and in Second Stage's "Becky Shaw," and has starred in several Broadway productions.
"Kidding on the Square" has been featured in the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, TimeOut NY, Bloomberg News, and Cabaret Scenes Magazine.WHEN
