Almost a year ago, Elderbrook joined forces with production duo CamelPhat to release "a cool little club record" called 'Cola'. Fate, however, had different plans when 'Cola' was catapulted from the underground and into charts all over the world. It emerged as a surprise nomination for the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording, and its success has recently seen Elderbrook and CamelPhat earn an Ivor Novello nomination for Best Contemporary Song.
Now, though, is the time for the London-based producer and songwriter to return as an artist in his own right. He commences a new deal with Parlophone by dropping the brand new track 'Sleepwalking'.
In keeping with Elderbrook's impossible-to-pigeonhole approach, 'Sleepwalking' is an engaging mix of the sweet and the sinister. Its insistent, almost tribal rhythm provides an enticing groove, whileElderbrook's almost whispered lyrics evoke images of a world in the wake of an environmental catastrophe. The verses are contrasted by an uplifting hook built to soundtrack the summer, while the production continues to progressively add fresh elements all the way through to the song's denouement.
Elderbrook wrote the track with
Empire of the Sun's Nick Littlemore during a visit to Los Angeles. Mixed by David Wrench (The xx, Sampha), the track also features additional production courtesy ofToddla T.
"When I write, I have a music video in my head and this song inspired dark scenes of the world coming to an end," says Elderbrook. "It's about how the world has changed through human influence, but in the end we're insignificant because the world will win. It's almost apocalyptic."
Elderbrook's initial breakthrough came when a track he posted to a modest number of SoundCloudfollowers went viral, which resulted in him landing a deal with Black Butter Records. Early releases such as 'Could' and its parent EP 'Simmer Down' resulted in comparisons with the likes of James Blakebefore he struck out on his own with his independent label Mine Records.
He released his second EP 'Talking' last year as 'Cola' was breaking big. It inspired MTV to include him in their
Brand New For 2018 list, while Magnetic Magazine highlighted him as #1 in their Artists to watch in 2018 feature.
Elderbrook has been selling out headline shows all over the world. In the last year alone, he sold-outXOYO and the
Oval Space in London while his growing international acclaim resulted in sold-out shows at The Roxy and L.A. and
Baby's All Right in NYC. He's set to return to the States repeatedly throughout the year with a June / July tour as support to Bonobo and Rüfüs Du Sol; festivals includingLife is Beautiful and Bumbershoot; and his biggest American headline shows to date in September.
Back home in the UK, his summer festival schedule so far features sets at Reading, Leeds and StandonCalling.
