The University of Hartford's The Hartt School kicks off its seventh season of the Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series with five-time Grammy Award-winning soprano Dawn Upshaw on October 15, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Ms. Upshaw will perform in recital with her longtime pianist, Gilbert Kalish. Upshaw has achieved worldwide celebrity as a singer of opera and concert repertoire ranging from the sacred works of Bach to the freshest sounds of today, and in 2007 was the first vocalist to be awarded the McArthur Genius Grant.
The Series continues on November 19 with the Dover Quartet, the young group who catapulted to international stardom following a stunning sweep of the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition, becoming one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world.
On February 4, 2016, the game-changing string quartet Brooklyn Rider presents its eclectic repertoire in gripping performances that continue to draw rave reviews from classical, world, and rock critics alike, joined by eclectic singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane.
The Garmany season concludes on March 10, 2016, with acclaimed concert cellist Steve Isserlis, joined British pianist Stephen Hough, whose performance has been hailed as "the most perfect piano playing conceivable," by The Guardian.
In just six seasons, with support from subscribers, patrons, and the Richard P. Garmany Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the Garmany Series has established itself as one of Hartford's premier cultural attractions, and the concerts now routinely play to full houses.
