Actor and musician, David Rowen, recently launched a music YouTube channel, davidrowen/creative, which will showcase arrangements and renditions of various songs from the radio, Broadway, and beyond.
Pulling artists from the Broadway/theatre community, the mission is to stimulate creativity and collaboration, and to share and inspire an appreciation for musical artistry.
The series launched earlier this summer with Rowen's four-part a cappella arrangement of "The Star-Spangled Banner," featuring Jake Odmark (Kinky Boots, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), and Adam Roberts (Pippin, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) of Broadway a cappella group Apollo Link, and Kevin DeJesus-Jones (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark).
Amid the prevailing social discord in our country, davidrowen/creative is aiming to promote peace and unity, and stir social change by producing a music video, featuring the beloved medley, "Joyful, Joyful," from the Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill film, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. The video will use song and dance to show that the unifying and inclusion of varying cultures should be celebrated.
"I hope that this video will help alleviate the pain of those who are afraid and disheartened due to current social disparities, and embolden them to seek equity and peace," Rowen says.
While the project is a work in progress, the video is currently set to feature rising star of the recent Ragtime concert on Ellis Island, Aisha Jackson (Waitress, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Kyle Taylor Parker (Kinky Boots), and Tiffany Mann (Invisible Thread, Sweeney Todd with the New York Philharmonic).
In addition to producing a music video, davidrowen/creative is raising awareness for Teen and Police Service (TAPS) Academy, a program that builds partnership and trust between at-risk youth and law enforcement by discussing relevant issues including bullying, anger management, gang membership, drug usage, and conflict resolution, as well as other community and police-related topics. TAPS Academy strives to remove the social distance between at-risk teens and police, and encourage positive and peaceful community-police interaction.Subscribe to davidrowen/creative on YouTube, and follow along on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
