The Duke Ellington Center for the Arts (DECFA) will present its 2nd Annual Jazz Vocalists Competition at the 41st Annual Duke Ellington 52nd Street Jazz Festival on Saturday, October 24, from 1 to 4 PM, on the Festival Performance Stage at the Southeast Corner of 52nd Street and Avenue of Americas in Manhattan.
More than one dozen up and coming jazz artists have registered so far. Cash przes will be awarded to the two top finalists: the winner will be awarded $250 and the first runner-up will receive $150.
The competition, which will be held rain or shine, will take place between 1 and 4 PM. The
Festival hoursNoon to 5 PM and takes place along 52nd Street between 5th and 7th
Avenues in Manhattan.
The Duke Ellington Center for the Arts was founded in 2004 by Duke Ellington's granddaughter Mercedes Ellington, a renowned dancer/choreographer, to further the knowledge about Duke Ellington as a composer, lyricist, bandleader, performer, artist and writer as well as to advance Ellington's creative legacy and his philosophy of human harmony 'beyond category.' The Center mounts performances that wed Ellington's music with other art forms, especially dance; and also sponsors a variety of educational initiatives.
