CONCRETE TIMBRE is pleased to announce 4 Wars, composed by Whitney George, Manuela Lechler, and Ann Warren, with a text by Mark Farnen. 4 Wars is directed by Ann Warren, and choreographed by Michelle Stuckey. 4 Wars will play a limited engagement at the Theater for New City (155 First Avenue, NYC). Performances begin Sunday, September 13.
4 Wars is an interdisciplinary theatrical production that shows a progression of people struggling to create social change in 4 countries in 1968: from Poland, in which a young woman tries to convince her parents to let her take part in the student protests; to Alexander Dub?ek defending to Brezhnev his social changes in Czechoslovakia; to a young protester in the midst of the Tlatelolco massacre in Mexico; to a group of Yippies in the East Village on the day after Nixon winning the Presidency determining what their next move should be. And there is a prologue that features a short scene from Adam Mickiewicz's Dziady that was translated by Concrete Timbre artist from Poland, Aleksandra Miglowiec.
The stories cover themes of hope, occupation, violence and finding a way to rise from the ashes. Now in 2015, the historical underpinnings of these events are more relevant than ever with the recent escalation of violent images and incidents and looking back to these experiences of the past can help shape our understanding of the present. The work features live contemporary classical music with electronics and world music elements, as well as movement and dance, and visual projections from 1968 news.
4 Wars features performances by musicians: HUGH ASH (trumpet), MELINDA FAYLOR (piano), JOE TUCKER (percussion), DAVID STEVENS (percussion), and CHARLOTTE MUNN-WOOD (violin); and an ensemble cast including: JONAS BARRANCA, DAROLD CUBA, EDGAR EGUIA, POLINA IONINA, CELY RIVA, and ALEJANDRA VENANCIO.
4 Wars features costume design by Sarah Thea Swafford, projections by Robert Morton, soundscapes by Chris Kadis Moscato, Beatriz García Barreto, setting by Richard Sage, and lighting design by Kryssy Wright.
