Song Salad (songsaladpodcast.com), a comedic, randomized songwriting podcast hosted by Shannon Deep and Scott Wasserman-a professional writer, professional musician, and professional best friends-is celebrating its one-year anniversary on January 31, 2017.
Every Monday, Shannon and Scott write a new short song about a randomly selected topic from Wikipedia in a randomly selected musical style. The audience learns about a different music genre and obscure topic, and listens in real time as the co-hosts struggle-often hilariously-to mash the two together into the semblance of a song.
Over the past year, episodes have run the gamut from a metal song about the fjords of Greenland, to a klezmer song about a terrible Richard Dreyfuss movie, to a Portuguese folk song about indigenous sea sponges of Venezuela. Occasional guest stars from the theater community also lend their talents to performing the songs, relieving the co-hosts from this heavy, embarrassing burden.
Co-host Scott Wasserman (Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen) says, "We definitely should have thought about sending out a press release when we started the podcast-instead of, you know, after we've been doing it for a year."
"I mean, sure," agrees Shannon (Huffington Post, Narratively), "But we didn't know that people were actually going to listen to it. So like, better late than never, I guess?"
