Cloud Cult is set to release their first ever acoustic album - Unplug - on Earthology Records on April 15th. The new full length record comes on the heels of Cloud Cult's early 2013 release - Love - which debuted in the Top 50 of the Billboard 200 and resulted in the majority of the band's 2013 tour dates selling out. Cloud Cult ventured out this past fall to perform a handful of very special acoustic shows. The response was overwhelmingly positive and the band ended the run with a three-night sold out stint at the Southern Theatre in Minneapolis, MN. It was these last three hometown shows that became Unplug.
"On the evenings of December 6th, 7th and 8th
Cloud Cult performed a set of songs arranged for the band's eight voices, twelve acoustic guitars and two canvases at the
Southern Theatre in Minneapolis. The setlist consisted of songs from the band's nine album discography, chosen for the continuity of their lyrical messaging. The shows were recorded and filmed live, and we chose our favorite songs from each night for this album." - Cloud Cult
Unplug was recorded, produced and mixed by Jeff D. Johnson who has been doing Cloud Cult's live sound for the past six years. The album was then mastered by Jeff Lipton (Bon Iver, Arcade Fire) at Peerless Mastering in Boston. While the songs were all pulled from the band's existing discography, the versions on Unplug are quite different than the album versions. In addition, Unplug is the band's tenth full-length release and first live album in their decade and half career. Cloud Cult's performance of this acoustic album was filmed and the video will also be released in late April.
Despite being offered record deals from major labels,
Cloud Cult has chosen to remain completely independent. They've sold more than 100,000 albums via their own label, Earthology Records, which was created by lead singer and songwriter Craig Minowa in the late 90's. The label pioneered many of the environmentally friendly manufacturing practices widely used today, and the band created models for zero net greenhouse gas production for touring bands. In addition to becoming known for their eco-friendly practices and music, the band's live shows have become legendary emotionally charged performances accompanied by live painting on stage. Craig Minowa (vocals, guitar) is joined on stage and on vocals by Arlen Peiffer (drums),
Shannon Frid Rubin (violin), Daniel Zamzow (cello), Shawn Neary (bass, trombone), Sarah Perbix (keyboard, French horn, trumpet), Connie Minowa (visual artist), and
Scott West (visual artist).
After 15 years of performing intensely elaborate electric shows,
Cloud Cult is set to bring a pure, intimate and stripped down performance to the stage this spring to accompany the April 15th release of Unplug. The upcoming shows are an "evening with"
Cloud Cult as each night features two complete sets - one acoustic and one electric. Upon being announced the
Minnesota dates sold out in less than 4 hours and many of the other shows are well on their way.
