New Jersey Performing Arts Center welcomes acclaimed keyboardist Chick Corea, bass powerhouse Christian McBride, and drum master Brian Blade gather to form this stellar trio, which earned two GRAMMY Awards for the 2014 3-CD set Trilogy, an astonishing live recording that combines original compositions with standards like "The Song is You," "How Deep is the Ocean?" and "My Foolish Heart." Pianist Joey Alexander opens. See this spectacular jazz performance on Friday, April 12, 2019 at 8 p.m.
A DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, keyboardist, composer and bandleaderChick Corea is the fourth-most nominated artist in GRAMMY history, with 63 nods and 22 wins. From straight-ahead to avant-garde, bebop to jazz-rock fusion, Corea has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his career since playing with the genre-shattering bands of Miles Davis in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
With Trilogy, Corea performs in collaboration with two of the hottest stars in contemporary jazz: Six-time Grammy-winning bassist Christian McBride, one of the most respected and most recorded figures in the music world today; and versatile drummer-composer Brian Blade, of Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band, with whom he has released three acclaimed albums.
"(Corea, McBride and Blade) have an uncanny connection," said AllMusicin its review of the Trilogy project. "They fill space with gorgeous and subtle phrasings, gliding through all manner of styles with a seemingly effortless elegance, grace, and freshness."
This evening will open with a performance by rising pianist, composer and bandleaderJoey Alexander, who at age 15 has already recorded two GRAMMY-nominated studio albums, My Favorite Things and Countdown, as well as last year's Joey.Monk.Live!, which honored the Thelonious Monk Centennial. Alexander's third studio LP, 2018's Eclipse, blends original compositions with jazz classics by John Coltrane and Bill Evans, and durable standards like "The Very Thought of You" and The Beatles' "Blackbird."
