Tonight, October 29, Cheryl Bentyne, 9-time Grammy-winning member of The Manhattan Transfer performs with Mark Winkler, platinum-award winning jazz vocalist/lyricist, and sparks fly. Last year at Martinis Above Fourth this duo, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, was intent on proving how cool the West Coast Cool Jazz scene of the 50s still is and they're at it again to show off their vocal chops, together and separately, in "1 + 1 = 3 (Her Songs, His Songs and Their Songs!)" Tickets, available at www.martinisabovefourth.com, are priced at $20.
In "1 + 1 = 3," picture two of the best and swingiest singers on the planet together and what do you get? More swing, sass and song! Cheryl will be doing songs from her chart-topping CDs on Cole Porter and George Gershwin and Mark will be sharing songs from his last few platters featuring the work of Laura Nyro, Paul Simon, and Bobby Troup. And together they will be singing an explosive mix of standards, not- so-standards and originals. The duo routinely performs throughout the country, where they are greeted with sold-out houses and standing ovations. Fasten your seat belts for a great night!
"The SHOW (West Coast Cool ) was off the charts! I can honestly say it was the best jazz show I have ever experienced. . ." - Chris Loudon, Jazz Times
Cheryl Bentyne has been a member of The Manhattan Transfer since 1979. Bentyne's beautiful voice, wide range, versatility, and impressive stage presence made her a major asset for the popular vocal group from the start. Her album, Let's Misbehave: The Cole Porter Songbook, has been recognized by many as the Jazz album of 2012. Bentyne not only delivers the music of Cole Porter as no one else can, sprinkled throughout the show are love letters written by Cole Porter himself. Bentyne and Winkler released the highly-regarded, West Cost Cool, in 2013.
Mark Winkler's newest CD, Jazz and Other Four Letter Words, was released in August and has been rising on the JazzWeek charts. This CD once again finds Mark mixing his own originals with songs by Paul Simon, Dave Frishberg, Bob Dorough, and Rodgers and Hart. Cheryl Bentyne joins Mark for two songs. His 11th CD, released in August 2011, was named as one of the top 5 Jazz CDs of the year by Jazz Times magazine. It went high on the JazzWeek charts and got great reviews from over 26 critics including The Seattle Times, Don Heckman and All About Jazz.
