Charlie Cunningham - the English songwriter known for his goosebump-inducing vocals, lyrics that cut to the bone, and effortless command of his nylon-stringed guitar - has announced 'Permanent Way,' his second album and first for BMG out June 7th.
To accompany the announcement, Charlie has released his new single "Don't Go Far," produced by Rodaidh McDonald (Hot Chip, King Krule, The xx). "Don't Go Far" is signature Cunningham, swooping and diving to capture the deftest melody and the deepest emotion. It follows previously released album cuts "Sink In" and title track "Permanent Way," which have collectively logged over 5 million streams in the last two months alone. 'Permanent Way' was produced in part by McDonald in LA with additional production by Sam Scott and Duncan Tootil (Foals), and the album includes contributions from the White Brothers - better known as Hugo, Felix & Will from The Maccabees - who play on "Sink In."
"Rodaidh has a really unique ear for sonics and pushed me to move out of my comfort zone," says Charlie, "definitely for the better."
Working with Rodaidh was not the first time Charlie has been pushed out of his comfort zone. He spent a two-year sojourn in southern Spain, where he fell in love with flamenco. That style of guitar playing permeates Charlie's music today through his precise picking and lyrical riffs.
Charlie's songs have amassed over 150M Spotify streams and counting, and he's been hailed by MOJO as "heartfelt and wise beyond [his] years," with NME declaring, "there's a fire stoked beneath the lilting melodies."
Charlie just wrapped up a US tour with Ry X, which included shows at Brooklyn's Murmrr Theater and the Theater at the Ace Hotel in LA. This fall, he'll return to the states for a headlining tour that includes stops at Brooklyn's Rough Trade and the Echo in LA. Full tour routing below, tickets go on sale this Friday, April 12th.
