Cheese On Bread, the queer indie-pop band known for their outstanding live shows, unlikely arrangements and an uneasy tension between silly and serious is proud to announce an April 6 album release show at Joe's Pub in support of their highly anticipated third album, The One Who Wanted More.
Formed in 2002 by playwright Dan Fishback (The Material World, Rubble Rubble) and musician Sara Kelly, Cheese on Bread made a name for themselves playing in NYC's anti-folk scene and around the world. The band released two albums (2004's Maybe Maybe Maybe Baby and 2007's The Search for Colonel Mustard), inspiring Next Magazine to say, "What Ugly Betty is to television, Cheese On Bread is to music." Following a decade-long hiatus, the band has reunited to record their latest LP, a meditation on the Sisyphean task of becoming an adult while still juggling the same stupid problems that tormented you as a child. Growing up may be an illusion, but at least Cheese on Bread's music is there to help get you through.
The One Who Wanted More was funded by an 11K Kickstarter campaign, backed with a video that included appearances by Alan Cumming, Kimya Dawson and pop songwriter Justin Tranter (Justin Bieber's "Sorry"). The One was put on tape in annual marathon recording sessions dating back to 2015, as the band's members live separately in NYC, Los Angeles and Washington DC. Cheese on Bread describe their newest release as "bouncy rock" that stresses the sharp contrast between the band's child-like vocals and complex compositions, their sing-song melodies and stylistic experimentation. "We started out as practically a joke band," says founding member Dan Fishback, "and while our themes and compositions have gotten more mature over the years, we've tried to retain a goofiness at the core of everything we do."
The band's first single off The One is "Bad Friend," which will be accompanied by a video starring Mx Justin Vivian Bond, directed by filmmaker Stephen Winter (Chocolate Babies, Jason and Shirley). The album track "All Your Sisters" features vocals by Shea Diamond (the first out black transgender woman signed to a major label) and NYC cabaret icon Molly Pope. The album art of The One Who Wanted More comes courtesy of longtime Cheese on Bread collaborator and New Yorker cartoonist Sara Lautman.
