The 2008 Grammy-nominated Brothers of Baladi band brings its rhythm-heavy mix of percussion and exotic strings to Whidbey Island Center for the Arts for one show at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Nov. 15.

A fun evening out for the whole family, the Brothers of Baladi take audiences on a cultural adventure of creative spirit; journeying to a musical place that mixes a wide-range world styles and pumps up the crowd.

This band plays a mix of traditional Middle Eastern songs, along with some well-chosen cover songs and a smattering of unique original material on instruments most of us haven't heard of, such as the oud, saz, mizmar, midjwiz, Arabic table/doumbek, def, riq and davul. But they also bring along an electric guitar, bass and drum set, and add vocals in eight languages (Arabic, Turkish, Spanish, Farsi, Armenian, Berber, French, and English). The result is a seamless blend of exotic world rhythms and sounds so infectious that it's impossible to keep dancers in their seats.

Tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for youths. Season tickets to the Family Series are available at a discount through box office.

WICA's Family Series includes free matinees to all 6th and 7th graders and master classes for our local youth, which augments our arts in education mission.
