The ROCK LOTTERY concept is simple, but effective. Twenty-five musicians meet at 10:00AM at the evening's performance venue. These volunteers are organized into five bands through a lottery-based chance selection. The five different groups are then released to practice at different locations. The musicians have twelve hours to create a band name and three to five songs (with a one cover song limit.) The bands then return to the venue by 10:00PM and perform what they have created in front of a waiting audience.

The twenty-five musicians included in this experiment are carefully selected to represent a wide variety of musical styles. This event will bring together many facets of the music community that may seem incompatible, as well as musicians whose interests may conflict. The challenge for these participants is to try and go beyond their personal and musical differences and work together to create a unified group project that contains the personal styles of each of its members.

MISSION: Brooklyn Rock Lottery has typically donated 100% of our proceeds a local non-profit that benefits the Brooklyn community. Last year, in light of the troublng political climate, we changed it up, donating 50% to Feel the Music and the other 50% between The Trevor Project, ACLU and Planned Parenthood. We'll be keeping in line with that train of thought; we want to benefit not only our local community, but also our global community. This year, we have teamed up with PLOT, a mentoring program for at-risk youth between the ages of nine and twenty-one living in Brooklyn, New York; many of their mentees were involved, or are at risk of becoming involved, in the juvenile or criminal justice system. PLOT will receive 50% of proceed, while the other 50% will go to Unidos Por Puerto Rico, in an effort to provide aid and support to those affected in Puerto Rico by the passage of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane María.

Brooklyn Rock Lottery has always been based on promoting community (local musicians, local vendors, local charities) and diversity (participants from all genres, race, sex, age, etc), and celebrating the rich cultural legacy that defines us and makes us beautiful. In these days the sanctity of this cultural richness, in Brooklyn and America at large, continues to be in jeopardy. As we expand to different cities, it remains the utmost importance for us to protect and celebrate the diversity of the globalcommunity of humanity and the vast array of artistic expression that come with it.

BACKGROUND: Instigated by Good/Bad Art Collective in 1997, the ROCK LOTTERY has become a highly anticipated music event throughout the United States. In addition to spawning official sister events in Brooklyn, Los Angeles and Seattle, the concept has been much emulated across the continent with RL-inspired events in Chicago, Washington DC, Baltimore, Victoria BC, Atlanta, San Francisco, Louisville, and Columbus, OH.

In its twenty-year history, the three cities hosting an official ROCK LOTTERY have featured over 800 musicians and raised money for charities as diverse as the VERA Project, CASA, Daniel's Music Foundation, Rockaway Renegades, Friends of the Family, Feel the Music, Save Fry Street, KEXP, Arts Corps, Parkland HealthPlus, the Denton County African American Museum and more.

Musicians who have volunteered their time and talent over the last twenty years come from a variety of acclaimed national and international acts including Antibalas, Antony & The Johnsons, Caveman, The Dap-Kings, DARKSIDE, Deerhoof, Delicate Steve, The Dismemberment Plan, Dresden Dolls, Drive Like Jehu, Fela!
