Brooklyn Music School Faculty Member Tatiana Viscun to Receive Civic Award

Brooklyn Music School (BMS) faculty member and pianist Tatiana Viscun will receive a Civic Award from City Council Member Laurie Cumbo on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 5:30pm. The program begins at 5:30pm at the free "Brass, Pipe Organ and the Piano" concert on October 6, 2018 at the Hanson Place Church of SDA. Milton O.C. Haynes, M.D will also receive a Civic Award.

"Congratulations to Tatiana for this acknowledgement of her incredible talent and work, which have impacted so many. I am thrilled that her generous commitment to her craft and to her students is being recognized," said New York City Council Majority Leader, Laurie A. Cumbo.

"Tatiana is an extraordinary pianist and exceptional music teacher. She is an intuitive, insightful, and talented piano teacher whose dynamic sessions can integrate elements of the human body and nature into the art of the piano," said Bob Martin, Ph.D.

Born in Chelyabinsk, Russia, Tatiana Viscun's earliest musical memories are of the Russian and Ukrainian folk songs her parents sang. At the age of four, she began playing piano, igniting a lifelong passion with the instrument. She studied at the Special Music School in Krivoy Rog, Ukraine, and obtained her Bachelor of Music degree at the State Music College there. She went on to get a Master of Music from the State University of the Arts in Chisinau, Moldova, where she focused on Piano Performance and Pedagogy, Musical Pedagogy, and Choral Conducting.

Tatiana is inspired by the tradition of the Russian Piano School, which produced such incomparable performers as Sergey Rachmaninoff, Vladimir Horowitz, and Sviatoslav Richter and revered teachers such as Konstantin Igumnov and Heinrich Neuhaus. She feels inspired by a range of European and Russian composers, but retains a special affection for the Ballade No. 1, Op. 23 (G minor) by Chopin.

As a teacher, Tatiana strives to introduce her students to a broad range of musical possibilities, helping them develop a deep appreciation of the piano. Many of her students have won important piano competitions and festivals, and have been accepted at prestigious academies including Julliard, the Manhattan School of Music, the Special Music School at the Kaufman Center, the Boston Conservatory, and the St. Petersburg State Conservatory.

Tatiana enjoys being part of BMS and the Brooklyn Community, and values the school's excellent selection of instruments, its theater, and the mix of talented colleagues.
