Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College continues its 2015-16 season with a concert version of The Beatles' iconic album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, performed by the Art of Time Ensemble, tonight, November 21, 2015 at 8pm. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at BrooklynCenter.org or by calling the box office at 718-951-4500 (Tue-Sat, 1pm-6pm).
One part tone poem, one part rock opera, Sgt. Pepper is a cornerstone in rock and roll history. In this one-night-only concert, songs including "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "When I'm Sixty-Four," and "With a Little Help From My Friends" are reimagined in arrangements that affectionately celebrate the music while preserving the vocal harmonies and musical elements that earned its designation by Rolling Stone as "the most important rock and roll album ever made." Steven Page (founder and former lead of the band Barenaked Ladies) and Glen Phillips (frontman of Toad the Wet Sprocket) join singers Andy Maize (Skydiggers) and Craig Northey (The Odds) along with the twelve-piece Art of Time orchestra in a reimagining of The Beatles' groundbreaking album.
Led by internationally renowned concert pianist Andrew Burashko, Toronto's Art of Time Ensemble has, for over 15 years, redefined the classical music experience. Fusing high art and popular culture in programs that juxtapose the best of each genre, Art of Time entertains as it enlightens, revealing the universal qualities that lie at the heart of all great music.
Andrew Burashko formed Art of Time Ensemble in 1998 with the support of a small group of like-minded musicians and prominent figures in dance, theatre and other art forms, beginning with one-off concerts to small but enthusiastic audiences. Word quickly spread through Toronto's cultural scene. Today, Art of Time works with the best Canadian artists in the performing arts, film and literature, and noteworthy international musicians. The artists with whom the Ensemble have worked represent the finest in their genres, including writer Margaret Atwood, choreographer Peggy Baker, singers Madeleine Peyroux and Sarah Slean; actor Brent Carver, and many others.
Music and musicians are at the heart of Art of Time Ensemble; the ranks of their musicians are deep and their talent unmatched. Featured musicians include Branford Marsalis, Margo Timmins (of Cowboy Junkies) Gavin Bryars, Jonathan Goldsmith, Rachel Mercer, Benjamin Bowman (concertmaster of the American Ballet Theatre), Stephen Sitarski (concertmaster of Esprit Orchestra), Roman Borys (Gryphon Trio), Steven Dann (soloist and former principal violist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Vancouver Symphony and the National Arts Centre orchestra), Thomas Wiebe (soloist, cellist for the Duke Trio and Professor at the University of Western Ontario); Phil Dwyer (renowned composer, arranger and saxophonist) and Rob Piltch (the great Canadian guitarist and former member of Blood Sweat & Tears).
