LA-based singer-songwriter Ethan Gruska has released the track "Me Who Wasn't Trying (Break Mirrors Remix by Blake Mills and Shawn Everett)", produced by Mills (Fiona Apple, John Legend, Alabama Shakes) and Everett (Weezer, Alabama Shakes). Earlier this week, the song made its U.K. premiere on Clash, who praises, "The album highlight has a gilded beauty, a hazy summer evening glow that lingers on top of that dexterous songwriting." Gruska recently announced a residency this August at LA's Hotel Café, where he will perform songs from his acclaimed debut album, Slowmotionary. Also released today is an intimate video portrait of Gruska, filmed at Valentine Recording Studios in North Hollywood.
Los Angeles Times declares, "L.A.'s next great singer-songwriter? It might be Ethan Gruska" and goes on to praise, "Slowmotionary...showcases an assured songwriter with an inventive melodic flair and some heavy things to say about love and family...Gruska draws the listener in with his close-to-the-bone performances." Meanwhile, The Sunday Times attests, "The combination of his tremulous high tenor voice, soul-baring lyrics, spare but richly textured instrumentation and chord progressions that nod to Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Randy Newman and Elliott Smith produces music of startling beauty and emotional resonance."
Gruska's recently released debut, Slowmotionary was produced by Tony Berg (Andrew Bird, Phoebe Bridgers, Aimee Mann, etc.) and includes 12 original songs that were mixed by Bob Clearmountain and mastered by Bob Ludwig. In addition to Ethan on various instruments (piano, guitar and drums to name a few), the album features Blake Mills (Andrew Bird, Alabama Shakes) on guitar, Rob Moose (Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, etc.) on strings and violin, Gabe Noel (Joseph, Pete Yorn) on cello and bass and Ethan's sister, Barbara Gruska (The Belle Brigade, Jenny Lewis), on percussion.
Gruska first emerged onto the scene as part of the brother/sister duo, The Belle Bridage, which he formed with his sister, Barbara Gruska in 2011. As the grandchildren of award-winning composer, John Williams, the sibling pair comes from a strong upbringing in music. In addition, Gruska co-produced Phoebe Bridges' new album, Smoke Signals.
