Fireball Southern rockers Black Stone Cherry hail from the small town of Edmonton in south central Kentucky, also home to The Kentucky Headhunters. Black Stone Cherry's drummer, John Fred Young, is the son of singer/guitarist Richard Young and the nephew of drummer Fred Young. The band's rich musical background in their community and families led to their interest in music and moving to the infamous "practice house," a shack on the Young family farm where they wrote and rehearsed before their big break. The "practice house" is also where the Kentucky Headhunters groomed their talent. Chris Robertson, lead vocalist/ guitarist and drummer/vocalist John Fred Young met in kindergarten. Jon Lawhon, bass/vocalist, moved with his family from Jacksonville, Florida and started playing with the other guys in their early teens. Black Stone Cherry formed June 4, 2001 with the addition of Ben Wells, guitarist/vocalist from the nearby town of Glasgow, Kentucky. They began playing locally in clubs and opening slots for national rock acts, quickly gaining a following in the south and midwest. Through the help of Bill McGathy of Indegoot Management, the band landed a record deal with Roadrunner Records. Their first self titled project was released in 2006, produced by Richard Young and local engineer David Barrick, garnered Black Stone Cherry's first Top 10 rock track with "Lonely Train" in the U.S. The album exploded like gasoline in the states and spread throughout Europe, gaining them opening slots for bands as diverse as Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Whitesnake and Motorhead. Their second album, Folklore and Superstition (2008), produced by Bob Martlette of Ozzy fame, continued the momentum with a No. 1 UK release. The album contained the classics "Things My Father Said" and "Peace is Free." Their third album, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (2011), produced by Howard Benson (Motorhead, 3 Day's Grace), once again hit the UK top spot. Black Stone Cherry's fourth album Magic Mountain (2014), produced by Joe Baressi (Soundgarden, Chevelle), came out with the blistering rock track, "Me and Mary Jane," taking the album to No. 1 in the UK. On April 1, 2016, Black Stone Cherry will release their self-produced fifth album, simply titled Kentucky with the prestigious rock /blues label, Mascot Records.
