The official video for Bishop Gunn's song "Alabama," is premiering today via Rolling Stone Country who hails, "'Alabama,' is something of an outlier, downplaying the group's amplified attack in favor of haunting chord progressions and swampy, gospel-influenced vocal hooks. The result is a spooky ballad fit for a Stephen King movie, with a music video to match." The video was directed by Tyler Barksdale and filmed entirely in Leiper's Fork, TN. Watch/share the video HERE.
The band is on tour now including dates supporting Whiskey Myers throughout November and December. Most recently the band has toured with The Marcus King Band, as well as with Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blackberry Smoke. They have also confirmed an appearance onThe Southern Rock Cruise in January. See below for details.
Bishop Gunn continue to support their debut album Natchez (named after the band's hometown in Mississippi), which entered the Billboard Blues Chart at #4 and theHeatseekers South Central Chart at #8. The record is receiving widespread critical acclaim-Nashville Scene explains, "If you're looking for some seriously good Southern rock, look no further than Bishop Gunn. The Natchez, Miss., four-piece draws from the best parts of the genre-like white-hot guitar licks, wailing harmonica, and big, soulful vocals-and kicks all the bad (Confederate flags, for instance) to the curb," while Milwaukee Journal Sentinel furthers, "Its 11 songs rope gospel, country and of course blues into a sound that is as much a Stones-style refraction of the Southern thing as it is the thing itself. But it's nitty-gritty enough."
Four songs from Natchez were recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in 2017 with producer Mark Neill (The Black Keys). The album's lead single, "Shine," was the first release of material tracked inside the legendary MSSS since it reopened in January 2016. At MSSS, the band recorded simultaneous live tracking of guitars, drums, vocals, bass-something they'd never done before. The album also features six songs cut at The Purple House, a Leiper's Fork home studio operated by Grammy-winning producer Casey Wasner.
Bishop Gunn is Travis McCready (vocals), Burne Sharp (drums), Drew Smithers(guitar) and Ben Lewis (bass). Following many years in steelwork in Natchez, McCready decided to go into music full time. After both playing music in various incarnations, McCready and Sharpe connected at the big annual festival in Natchez. A friendship and collaboration formed, rooted in the history and sounds of their home and the surrounding Delta. They added members and Bishop Gunn's current lineup stuck shortly thereafter. Now, the band members live together, write and have set up a home studio in a farmhouse just outside Leiper's Fork. They rehearse at a repurposed grocery store in the area.
