Ben Pearce has dropped his first original EP since last year's 'Pomelo'. The 4 track Ascension EP on Different Recordings is available now.
Ascension is the first EP out of a 4-part concept series that will allude to Ben's own life, career and experiences in the music industry. Each EP will tie together yet have its own meaning, with conceptual visuals dropping throughout the year to accompany the musical journey.
The inspiration for this EP came from the idea of millions of voices competing for attention in the social media age. With this constant noise merging into silence, artists can feel like isolated and intimidated when putting out music.
'Imagine a spaceman, being pulled up by something out of his control. He enters a place he doesn't fully understand'
To coincide with Ascension, Ben was the first guest on Moda Black's all-new In Conversation podcast series. During the hour-long interview he discussed his entry into music, the pressure to conform, touring, his plans for 2017 and much more.
The appropriately titled first track Intro is a beat-less introduction to the concept, filled with whispering voices and crescending synths. It's followed up by Transit, which introduces a soft bassline and a slow building soundscape of chords.
The fast paced bubbling arpeggios and ominous bassline of The Middle make it the most dancefloor-leaning track on the EP, whilst Crescent ends the EP on a more uplifting note. Gradually building layers of chords and synth melodies over a soft bassline make for an immersive, almost cinematic closing track. Ben also collaborated with up-and-coming Swedish singer Elias on a vocal version of Crescent which brings an exciting new element to the production.
The variety of moods and tempos expressed over the course of the EP's four tracks are structured similarly to a short set, whilst reflecting the variety of Ben's experiences over the years.
