Banjo virtuoso and 14 time Grammy Award winner Béla Fleck performs new work with Brooklyn Rider string quartet at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Sunday, June 29 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $60, $70, $80 and can be purchased online at www.whbpac.org.
Grammy Award-winner Béla Fleck is a powerfully creative force in bluegrass, jazz, pop, rock and world beat. He virtually reinvented the sound of the banjo through a remarkable career that has taken him all over the musical map. First making his name in the seminal bluegrass ensemble New Grass Revival with Sam Bush, Béla then formed The Flecktones which combined elements of jazz, jam-band and folk music and have become wildly popular for their brilliant genre-defying live concerts. In 2001 Béla finally delivered "Perpetual Motion" his acclaimed foray into the classical world, which picked up two Grammys.
This performance with Brooklyn Rider is a match made in heaven. A 21st-century string quartet, Brooklyn Rider plays everything from Persian folk music to Debussy with grace, spirit, vigor and profound insight. Known for their work with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road project, BK Rider is committed to the creation of new works. From its appearances at venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center to a recent tour in China, Brooklyn Rider is credited with "recreating the 300-year old form of the string quartet as a vital and creative 21st-century ensemble" (NPR). The program is anchored by Night Flight Over Water, Fleck's newly composed quintet for banjo and string quartet.
Together, Béla Fleck & Brooklyn Rider will play original compositions by both Béla and the quartet...and some classic bluegrass for good measure!
