Swedish singer and producer Becky and the Birds has released the video encapsulating the entirety of her recently released self-titled debut EP. WATCH HERE!
The video premiered with HUNGER who said, "Becky and the Birds is the name you need to remember. Releasing her self-titled debut EP earlier this year, she spanned genres and mixed up her vast influences, resulting in a highly acclaimed first endeavour. Deciding she would celebrate the power of women through music, Becky and the Birds has created an 11-minute visual interpretation of her EP."
An emotive and captivating work of art, the video translates each track on the EP into a moving visual interpretation, following six moments in six women's lives. Flowing seamlessly through intimate portraits of love, melancholy and surreal hedonism, the video is a hugely perceptive study of emotion, character and relationships.
EP opener 'Becky' casts light onto a woman starting her day among the dappled morning light in her bedroom, while 'Malaysia' captures the fantasy of escapism in the big city and 'Die While You Love Me' follows the intensity of infatuation within mundane environments.
Becky and the Birds' most recent single 'Concept Store', which has received huge acclaim and support from Communion's Maz Tappuni at Radio X, sees a girl skate through the streets into a debauched house party.
The tearaway debut single 'Holding On' follows a late night journey of a distraught driver and the EP and video finishes with 'My Man', which stars Thea Gustafsson herself in an embrace with a man.
The Becky and the Birds EP features a genre-spanning blend of lush electronics, with nods to trip-hop and '90s R&B and the result is reminiscent of SZA,
Solange and Erykah Badu. It finds Becky and the Birds taking ownership of her work while rejecting the pop-saturated sound of her native Sweden, resulting in a true-to-self, multifaceted project.
Becky and the Birds is the moniker of Thea Gustafsson, the 21-year-old from Örebro who writes, produces and sings all of her own music and attended the prestigious Musikmakarna Songwriters Academy of Sweden, which kickstarted the careers of LÉON and Skott.
Thea has already clocked up millions of streams as a topline vocalist in high profile collaborations, however these relentless sessions with all-male producers began to grate on her. "I always had this voice inside me-society's voice-that was like 'No, you can't, 'cos you're a girl, that's for the boys'" she explains.
"I was like, I can't do this any more-having all these dudes mansplaining, sitting with their spread legs," Thea says. "I was just so frustrated. When you have a really clear vision yourself, it's difficult to compromise.
At one particularly bad session with a producer - "I felt the whole panic that you feel when you think you're not good enough" - it led her to develop a whole new guise; Becky and the Birds.
