Bebop Meets Metal in Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata's "I Have Confidence"

Lovers of the movie version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's 'The Sound of Music' will recall Julie Andrews' Maria striding purposefully with a large suitcase and clicking her heels as she sings, "I have confidence in ME!" Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata's hyper-kinetic arrangement of the beloved tune on 'The Hills Are Alive' (Canal Records, 3/8), their bold re-imagining of the beloved musical, is quite different.

Bebop meets metal as Canadian rock/new wave icon Carole Pope (of the band Rough Trade) offers a snarling, acidic take on the lyrics in between explosive, wailing solos from the tenor sax of acclaimed sideman Michael Blake, best known for his work with the Lounge Lizards. Layers of smooth, jazzy background vocals ("Zabadabada!! Woo woo!") give the tune an even more surreal feel before it ends as abruptly as it starts.

It may not be what some expect from 'The Sound of Music,' but the team at the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is so enamored with BRO's versions of the songs that they've granted the group unprecedented artistic license, citing the group's "affection, skill and superb musicianship."
