World renown jazz pianist, composer, bandleader and educator, Arturo O'Farrill will appear tomorrow, Friday, at the legendary Cornelia Street Café as part of the Café's SOLOFEST. O'Farrill, a multi-Grammy Award winner, founder and Artistic Director of the non-profit, Afro Latin Jazz Alliance will appear solo on this occasion, in the intimate setting of the Café's downstairs performance space.
O'Farril, who was born in Mexico, is the son of one of Cuba's most important and influential musicians, Chico O'Farrill. Both father and son have been credited with the preservation of the Afro-Cuban sound.
Arturo is globally recognized among the leading influential musicians of our time and he is the recipient of numerous awards. In 2006 he received his first Grammy Award nomination for his debut album with the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, with whom he often tours, titled, Una Noche Inolvidable. In 2009 he received his first Grammy Award for his album, Song for Chico and in 2015 he received yet another Grammy for The Offense of the Drum. Arturo is also the winner of the Latin Jazz USA Outstanding Achievement Award and a Cubadisco Award for The Offense of the Drum. Last year he released Cuba: The Conversation Continues on the Motema label and received his third Grammy in 2016 for Best Instrumental Composition.
Arturo will appear solo as part of a month long series of solo performances by a diverse group of artist doing everything from monologues to storytelling and music.
