Art Garfunkel to Perform at North Carolina Symphony, 3/2

Pop music legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Art Garfunkel joins Maestro William Henry Curry and the North Carolina Symphony next month for a concert tribute to the very best from his 50-year career in music.

The concerts take place at Meymandi Concert Hall, in the downtown Raleigh’s Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts, on Friday and Saturday, March 2-3 at 8:00 p.m.

Although it has been 35 years since “Bridge Over Troubled Water” was recorded, Art Garfunkel’s image and signature vocals remain among the most instantly recognizable in popular music. His “beautiful countertenor,” as Neil Strauss described Garfunkel’s voice in The New York Times, remains clear and resonant and a time-honored friend to a world of listeners.

He joins the Symphony to revisit some of the most popular works from his career. His first solo album, Angel Clare, was released in 1973 to critical and commercial acclaim, followed by Breakaway, featuring the mega-hit “I Only Have Eyes For You.” Scissors Cut was named one of the best albums of 1981 by Rolling Stone magazine, and, in January 2007, Garfunkel released his twelfth solo album, Some Enchanted Evening, a musical celebration of material from the 20th century’s greatest songwriters.

The North Carolina Symphony opens the concert with a sampling of popular orchestral selections, including works by favorite film composer John Williams as well as“Shenandoah” and “America the Beautiful” as arranged by Calvin Custer in his “American Frontier” collection of patriotic music. Then Art Garfunkel takes the stage to complete a memorable evening of great music for Triangle concertgoers.

Garfunkel was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and received the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.

Regular tickets to the Symphony’s Pops performances featuring Art Garfunkel on Friday and Saturday, March 2-3 range from $45 to $100, with $45 tickets for seniors and $10 tickets for students.
