Anoushka Shankar, who learned at the knee of her sitar maestro father, Ravi Shankar, will cross the 1,000-year-old bridge between Indian classical and Spanish flamenco roots on her U.S. "Traveller" tour, stopping at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m.
Shankar, the youngest performer ever to be nominated for a "Best World Music Album" Grammy and who has shared the stage with Sting, Herbie Hancock, Elton John, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, James Taylor and legendary rock band Jethro Tull, will enthrall listeners by her deep understanding of the connection between the Indian and Gypsy musical traditions.
Just released in the United States in March and hitting No. 1 on world music charts, "Traveller" is her sixth album, the third in a series of experimental musical hybrids, and marking her debut with the Deutsche Grammophon label. The trilogy includes her self-produced and Grammy-nominated "Rise" in 2005 and "Breathing Under Water," a collaboration with instrumentalist and composer Karsh Kale. The "Traveller" tour started in Europe in late 2011 and went to India in early 2012 before coming to the United States last month. Shankar gave an online debut performance in July 2011 on medici.tv.
Shankar calls the tour a "raga flamenco journey." As she and Javier Limón, album producer and Spanish guitarist/composer, experimented with the instrumental, song and dance components of Indian music and flamenco, they discovered that a pure form of each bubbled up in the mixture.
