Washington National Opera (WNO) will present famed Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu in concert on Saturday, March 3 at 7 p.m. in the Kennedy Center Opera House. Accompanied by the WNO Orchestra under the baton of Eugene Kohn, Gheorghiu will perform selections from operas by Mozart, Massenet, Puccini, and others that have made her an international sensation.

Angela Gheorghiu’s magnificent voice and dazzling stage presence have established her as one of opera’s greatest singing actresses. She made her international debut in 1992 at London’s Royal Opera House with La bohème. It was there she first sang her much celebrated La traviata in 1994, when the BBC cleared out its schedule to broadcast the opera. Since then Ms. Gheorghiu has been in constant demand in opera houses and concert halls around the world.

Future engagements include the title roles of Lucia di Lammermoor, Manon Lescaut, Tosca, Lucrezia Borgia, and Alceste, as well as roles in Don Carlos and Don Giovanni. Her most recent CD Homage to Callas was released by EMI Classics in October 2011.

Ms. Gheorghiu has been honored with La Medaille Vermeille de la Ville de Paris, and she was appointed an Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres and a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.

The March 3 concert is the first of the season’s Plácido Domingo Celebrity Series performances. Coming up next on March 17 is DiVa Light: An Evening with Deborah Voigt, in which the noted Wagnerian singer will perform classics from the American songbook, featuring special guest Teddy Tahu Rhodes (star of WNO’s Così fan tutte) and accompanied by the WNO Orchestra conducted by Ted Sperling
