WHOA:
Acclaimed as "perhaps Danielpour's best piece ever" by The Philadelphia Inquirer, A Woman's Life was written especially for Angela Brown, and commissioned and premiered in its orchestral version by the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony. Raving about the "compelling music [which] honors Angelou," The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette noted that "the cultural references to jazz idioms follow those of Angelou's life, from big band swing to
Billie Holiday-like blues to vibes-infused jazz ... [in a] rich, tonal musical language ... and an attractive lyricism." Still's four luxuriant, deeply touching songs trace different times in a women's life, from childhood (a young girl singing to her doll) to adolescence to middle age and finally a mother's grief over the death of her son.
A meet-the-artists reception follows the performance
