Abram Shook Releases New Single CAN'T GET AWAY On Western Vinyl Image

Austin-based musician Abram Shook has released a new single, "Can't Get Away", today via Western Vinyl, hinting at a new album, the follow up to 2017's Love At Low Speed, for later this year.

Discussing the track, Shook said, "I'm not sure when it all started for me, but definitely long before Trump or the current IPCC report I've been dealing with an enormous amount of pessimism and dread about the fate of humanity. I try to keep most those thoughts to myself except for around a handful of very trusted friends, so most of it finds its way into my music as a release. 'Can't Get Away' is about the mounting pressure of feeling that there's somethingREALLY bad coming our way, but that there's no where to run to avoid it. I put some lines in about Trump, global warming, the coal industry, smoking weed to deal with anxiety, and quite literally running away from it all."

Those familiar with Shook's previous work understand that he has always explored his own brand of off-kilter funk, from the soulful swagger of his 2015 debut album Landscape Dream's standout single "Coastal", through 2017's Love At Low Speed's Prince-inspired "Lies". The varied influences of world music and jazz that are present in all his records can still be heard, though with the chance purchase of a vintage Sequential Circuits Prophet 600, Shook tucks them into the corners and uses them in more subtle ways, giving center stage to the Prophet, a drum sequencer, and his signature rubbery bass lines. Produced by Shook, the track was mixed by Danny Reisch (The Octopus Project, White Denim, Other Lives).
