ARUN RAMAMURTHY WITH AKSHAY ANANTAPADMANABHAN
(ARUN RAMAMURTHY, violin; AKSHAY ANANTAPADMANABHAN, mridangam; ROOPA MAHADEVAN, vocals; MITHUN RADHAKRISHNA, mandolin)

Carnatic Music is the classical music of South India. Like its counterpart in the North, Carnatic music is based on raga & tala. An emphasis on rhythm in Carnatic compositions and improvisations lead to lively interactions between the musicians, an exciting and spontaneous element of the Carnatic tradition. Tonight will feature four Carnatic musicians from NYC and their musical interpretations. ARUN RAMAMURTHY is an exciting violinist who is making his mark in the Indian Classical and World Music scene. Born and raised in the United States, Arun hopes to bring his musical culture to the mainstream with traditional yet new improvisations. Arun performs with innovative jazz/Indian groups, Namaskar and Lotus 5 and also leads Banyan Trees, an acoustic rock/Indian classical blend. He is privileged to study under one of India's leading violinists, Dr. Mysore Manjunath, a virtuosic and fresh breath for Carnatic music. AKSHAY ANANTAPADMANABHAN is a talented mridangist (South Indian drum) and student of the world renown T.H. Subash Chandran (ghatam artist). His virtuosic yet musical approach has made him a popular artist for musicians touring from India. He has collaborated with Latin jazz, rock and Brazilian musicians in unique showcases on Indian percussion. ROOPA MAHADEVAN is a Carnatic vocalist born and raised in San Jose, California. She is a student of Smt. Asha Ramesh, disciple of the legendary vocalist D.K. Jayaraman. In 2007, she received the U.S. Fulbright Scholarship to receive advanced training in Chennai, India under Smt. Suguna Varadachari. This year, she was fortunate to receive the 'Kala Ratna' award from the well-known Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana for her pursuit of Carnatic music as a South Asian American. MITHUN RADHAKRISHNAN has been playing the Mandolin since the age of 11. Inspired and initiated to the instrument by the pioneer of Carnatic mandolin, Mandolin Srinivas, Mithun began performing in venues in India. The mandolin he plays has only 5 strings unlike the traditional 8 stringed Mandolin.
